Blockchain, NFTs, Web 3.0, Metaverse… What’s everyone talking about?

Hey. So if you’re reading this, you probably want to understand what everyone is talking about in reference to Blockchain, NFTs, Web 3.0, and the Metaverse.

I’ve recently had a lightbulb moment when it all started making sense to me, so I’m going to try to explain it in an easy way to understand and how it all comes together. I’m still early in my learnings but I thought I’d share some of my knowledge so that you’ll have a starting point when you’re trying to wrap your head around these things, and to just have a general understanding of what these things are.

Blockchain

A blockchain is a chain of blocks that contain information — for example, a bitcoin block contains information about the sender, receiver, number of bitcoins, and it all works within this decentralized network (that isn’t governed by any entity but by computers). Everything on the blockchain is recorded such as transactions and everyone on the blockchain has the same copy of these transactions. For things to be executed within the blockchain they are done by the use of smart contracts.
